Precalculus Placement Exam Information

All students wishing to take Math 12, 16A, 17A, 21A, 21AH, 36, 67, or Chem 2A, 2AH must satisfy the MPR with sufficiently high scores on the Precalculus Diagnostic Exam (as shown in the table below), calculus AP exams, or mathematics SAT scores as explained in the next paragraph. The Mathematics and Chemistry Departments will drop students who do not satisfy the requirements for a particular course.

Students fulfill the MPR and are not required to take the Precalculus Diagnostic Exam when one of the following conditions are met: (a) Advanced Placement Calculus AB exam score of 4 or 5; (b) Advanced Placement Calculus BC exam score of 3, 4, or 5; (c) a score of 700 or above on the Mathematics section of the SAT Reasoning Test; or (d) in either of the SAT Mathematical Subject tests (Level 1 or Level 2) a score of 700 and above.

Unless you qualify for a waiver based on your AP or SAT scores (see the paragraph above), you must satisfy the MPR if you wish to enroll in Math 12, 16A, 17A, 21A, 21AH, 36, 67, Chem 2A or 2AH, as outlined in the table below.

Students arriving late will not be admitted!

      and that course recommendations should be carefully considered
      when selecting a mathematics course.

    All Exams are administered during Summer Advising and Orientation AND Orientation week of ALL quarters which exams are required by courses.

    Obtain a second opinion: Share your test results with your advisor or counselor, who can help you choose the right courses.

Helpful Notes about the Math Exam

This is a 60-question, 90-minute U.C./C.S.U. Precalculus Exam

To review your Algebra and Trigonometry:

Buy the booklet entitled entitled "Mathematics Preliminary Examinations" (approx. $2.60 at UCD Bookstore) which contains many practice and test-type questions.

OR

Buy the cliffnotes or super-cliffnotes for Algebra or Trigonometry at a cost of $10 at the UCD Bookstore, there is also a super-review of Algebra and Trigonometry combined for the cost of $10 at the UCD Bookstore.

OR

Obtain and review the appropriate FREE review materials at the Learning Skills Center Resource Room.

OR

Attend the FREE Review Series in Algebra or Review Series in Trigonometry mathematics workshops offered by the Learning Skills Center.

Note2: High school Trigonometry or Math C is required for Math 12,
      Math 16, Math 17 or Math 21.
